Writing Activities with No Grammar
My homemade writing classes are mainly for grades three though nine. My children enjoyed them a great deal, but of course I made the classes just for them. The activities in this section involve no grammar instruction in the process as I have it laid out.
Ease Into Writing: Timed Writing
I used timed writing at the beginning of each school year to remind them that writing is just not that difficult.
Sentence Starters
I do not remember much about this activitiy.
Add to a Story
A common game amoung children when they get together around a campfire.
Writing For an Audience
An exercise in choosing the right vocabulary and tone for a composition.

Assignment Planner
The Assignment Planner has 4
places to break down an assignment into phases. An assignment that is
commonly broken into phases is the research paper. Often, there will be
a due date for the completed assignment, a due date for the outline, a
due date for the rough draft and so on. This form might be useful for
your child to record what part of an assignment is due and when it is
due.
Resources:
The Synonym Finder by J. I. Rodale (an excellent thesaurus)
Hodges' Harbrace College Handbook by Hodges and Whitten, published by Harcourt, Brace, and Jovanovich (an excellent handbook) These can often be found at your public library and used book stores. The older editions are good so if you can find a used one for free or under $10, get it. [I have two, published in 1963 and 1984]
