Two Favorites: The Learnables and Rosetta Stone
What foreign language will your child learn and when will they start? If you want to start learning a language, then you will have several curricula to choose from. Two of the most "acclaimed" are The Learnables and The Rosetta Stone. It is not a coincidence that these two are both popular because they are both similar to each other. One requires a computer and the other requires a cassette/cd player. Both use native speakers, both use pictures. Both are used by young and old.
So.. Which should you choose if you wanted one?
Think about how you would to prefer to have the class.
While learning The Rosetta Stone the student uses the computer. You can subscribe to The Rosetta Stone online or you can buy the computer program. The student should use The Rosetta Stone for at least 30 minutes a day, which means that the computer needs to be available for that length of time.
When a student uses The Learnables, they will need to have access to a cassette player or a cd player. They will need to look at the pictures as they listen. If you are on the road everyday for at least 30 minutes, if you have a cd-player or cassette player in your car, and if your child isn't prone to car-sickness then The Learnables could be done while traveling as well as at home.
With all of that in mind, maybe you will have an easier time choosing.
We chose The Rosetta Stone because of the interactive feature in which you speak into a microphone and your accent is compared to a native speaker. That seems to help us quite a bit to improve our southern Spanish accent. :) In addition, using the computer for foreign language class is convenient for us.
