Yesterday was my wedding anniversary and I had to find a gift for my husband. He is a man who has almost everything. Many of the things that he doesn’t have and he wants are the things that I can’t afford. There was one thing that he did not have that he wouldn’t get for himself and that item is a lamp to read by in the living room. Many times he has mentioned that he doesn’t have enough light to read by. Apparently the man needs some light and I finally took the hint.
The only place in this town that I thought would have a lamp for my husband is a certain locally owned furniture store that has been in business since 1923. If you stepped foot in this store you would see why this store has stayed in business for 85 years. The photograph above shows where I went. It has the classic architecture of early 20th century town buildings, because that is what is, an early 20th century building. Happily, the insides have not been completely ruined by modern tastes.
Oh, by the way, this is my Applie Hike.
I started my quest for a lamp by properly parallel parking in front of the building. Yes, I backed into the empty space that was between 2 cars like good drivers are supposed to be able to do. *haha*
I went inside and began looking. While there, I took pictures to share because I think this place is a remarkable furniture store.
I started taking pictures upstairs. All but one of the pictures are taken upstairs.
The West Hall
All of the areas have numerous rooms and in this area, they usually feature children’s bedroom furniture, mattress sets, and a few miscellaneous items. I like the effect of the various soft colors they used here.
Proof that I was there.
The Front Hall
This is the Front Hall. Off this hall to the right are master bedroom suites, fabulous ones; the kind that requires a loan. To the right of this hall is a large room full of manly leather den furniture. From the big room you can go downstairs 1/2 level. [The interior is a split-level with 3 floors, two floors in front and three floors in the back.] At the end of this hall is another hall.
Oops, I didn’t take a picture of the manly leather furniture, but I did take a picture of the room that is off the manly leather room
I split the photograph into two halves. [Next two pictures]
The room off the manly room is full of furniture that you might like to have in your sitting room or a less manly den. The room has an assortment of sofas, chairs, lamps, short tables and dining height tables for those popular combo rooms.

The left side of the room
The Inner West Hall
There are two west halls. This one is lined with bookshelves and cabinets and it leads to more little rooms, nooks, and crannies. Behind the door at the end of this hall is a extremely old fashioned wash room. Part of this place used to be a doctor’s office. This hall leads to a split-level room that contains entertainment centers, small office sofas and chairs and of course, more lamps and tables, and bookshelves.
At the end of this hall-
The East Hall
This hall is full of little rooms with furniture for bedrooms, sitting rooms, and fancy game tables.
The top of the hall
The end of the hall
This big room that is upstairs and off the east hall carries casual furniture and sometimes some very strange furniture. There is nothing strange in there today.
This is the split-level room that is downstairs from the room pictured above. It holds dining furniture. This room leads down to a ground level floor that has even more dining furniture.
Ground Level Floor
The store has four of these huge ground level floors with the pressed metal ceilings. The four rooms hold sofas, chairs, bookcases, grandfather clocks, tables, you-name-it, and accessories such as paintings and lamps. There are usually some unusual things on the ground floor. I didn’t take a picture of any, but they have some nice wash room sinks that are built into or a part of what looked like a large concrete spindle.
This room has the lamp that I decided to purchase for my husband. (He is very pleased with it.) If you click on the image, the full sized image will load.
That is all for this tour [and hike, I was there for 90 minutes at least]. I hope you enjoyed it, I know it’s dry to just see photos, it is a lot better to be here to see this interesting store, which incidentally, is my favorite store for home furnishings.

So which lamp did you wind up purchasing for hubby?
Donna Young says
Elaine, I wrote that in the paragraph above the last picture. There is an arrow pointing to it in the last picture. It is not very visible, but it is a floor lamp of the right height (the bottom of the shade is rather low so the light does not glare in his eyes) and it has a pivoting arm so he can swing the light closer.

I can’t see it real well, but I’m sure I would love it. I really like the lamp in the center and I’m pretty sure I need the table it sits upon. I dunno. Will you pick one out for me, too?
My son wants to know if that is your store? 😆 He also thinks this is great –>
Donna Young says
😆 It’s not my store, but I like going there. It might be fun to work there.
Sure I can pick out something for you, but you have to come over here and help me. That lamp and table in the middle is really nice. You should drive across the state and get it.

How much for the fan at the end of the East Hall? 😆
Seeing all of those lamps…I think I need more lamps.
BTW, full-spectrum bulbs are great to read by.
Soooo…did you sing “You Light Up My Life” to hubby when you gave him his gift? 😛 Happy Anniversary! 🙂
Melanie says
Excellent hike! I love the look of that store – I’d probably get lost in there for hours and hours.
Donna Young says
Tresses that is funny, I didn’t even think of that song. 😆
Me too Melanie. I used to take the kids there at least once a year and we’d look around for a long time just for a change.

What a fun store! They have gorgeous furniture.
I think we would have to take a field trip there at least yearly to dream big!
That is a nice lamp you picked out for Dh. Did he like it?
Donna Young says
Yes he really did like it. 🙂
Elaine says
I didn’t see that arrow the first time 🙄 around and had to look for it the second time but I did see it and as far as I can tell it looks great for a reading lamp. Glad hubby likes it.
Appliejuice says
I love it! That’s a great hike. As I looked at the photos I kept wondering how you were going to pick out a lamp. They sure have a lot of them! Sounds like you got a good reading lamp. 🙂 I’ll put your name in the hat.

Happy Anniversary
I must have been on vacation when you posted this because I missed it 😯
I’m glad he liked his lamp. What a store!
Donna Young says
Thank You Lisa! 🙂
Yes, it is a fun store to browse around it. I’ve bought a lot of things from it over the years. 🙂
